Resolution setting a millage election seeking approval for a levy of .50 mil on taxable value in Columbia Township for a period of four years to support private, non-profit corporation or organization sponsored activities and/or services for senior citizens.

WHEREAS, Public Act 39, of 1976, authorizes a local unit of government to appropriate funds for activities to older citizens; and

WHEREAS, activities or services under said Act mean identifiable actions directed toward the improvement of social, legal, health, housing, educational, nutritional, recreational, or mobility status of older persons, being 60 years and older; and

WHEREAS, said Act provides a local governing body of a local unit of government may submit a millage proposition to the electorate to levy up to 1 mil for services to older citizens; and

WHEREAS, Columbia Township has elected to place said proposition before the electorate; and

WHEREAS, said proposition will appropriate funds to promote such private, non-profit corporation or organization for senior citizen activities and/or services.

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that Columbia Township does hereby resolve to submit the following ballot proposition in the primary election to be held on Tuesday, August 6, 2002.

"Shall the limitation on the total amount of taxes which may be assessed on the taxable valuation of real and personal property in Columbia Township, Van Buren County, Michigan, be increased by one-half (.50) mil, being $0.50 on each $1,000 of taxable valuation, for a period of four (4) years, commencing with the 2002 tax year for the purpose of appropriating funds for activities and/or services for older persons, meaning individuals over the age of 60 years, pursuant to Public Act 39, 1976. It is estimated the revenue collected by Columbia Township as a result of this proposal will be $26,645.00 in the first year of the levy."

Upon roll call vote, the following voted.

The Supervisor declared the resolution adopted.
