Land Division
Since the Michigan State Legislature enacted the Land Division Act in 1997,
dividing your property in Michigan became more complex. The Land Division
Act has been amended since 1997 and more amendments are likely.
The Land Division Process
- Obtain a copy of the current versions of the Land Division Act, the
Columbia Township Land Division Ordinance, the Columbia Township Land
Division Application, and the Land Division With Delinquent Taxes
Policy. Become familiar with these documents and the requirements
described therein.
- Plan your land division. Decide how many parcels you want to end
up with, how large each should be, and their dimensions.
- Either have a survey performed by a professional or create a scale
drawing of your land division. The Application lists all of the
elements that must be included on the survey or scale drawing.
- Complete the Land Division Application. Only a complete
application with all attachments can be accepted for
processing. The Application lists all required attachments.
- Submit the complete application, attachments, and fee.
- Once Columbia Township receives your complete application, attachments,
and fee, the law allows up to 45 days for the township to either approve
or disapprove your application.
- While Columbia Township officials are processing your application, you
may contact the Land Division Coordinator to obtain information and the
status of your application.
