Road Construction

Road Construction & Financing

All road construction is coordinated by the Van Buren County Road Commission.  The Road Commission performs some work while other work is contracted.

County Roads

Major maintenance and construction for county roads is funded by a combination of state and county moneys.  The Columbia Township receives an annual allocation of approximately $12,000 from the county.  The Board of Trustees decides each year which county roads will receive that money.  The remainder of county road work decisions are made by the Van Buren County Road Commission.

Local Roads

Major maintenance and construction for local roads is funded primarily with local road tax dollars and General Fund moneys.  In addition, approximately $25,000 is allocated each year by the county for local roads.  Local tax dollars are generated by an extra voted road tax of approximately 3 mills - over $122,000 for 1999 projects.  This money can only be used for local roads.  Each year, the Board of Trustees decides how much General Fund money to contribute toward local road projects in addition to the road tax money.  The amount of this annual General Fund contribution will depend upon competing needs for the money within the township.
